Why James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” Took So Long to Make?

Sven Kramer
November 5, 2023

Remember when James Cameron took us on a journey to the ethereal world of Pandora in 2009 with “Avatar”? It is hard to forget those luminescent jungles and otherworldly vistas that had us collectively holding our breath in theaters. And if that was not groundbreaking enough, “Avatar” marked its territory in cinematic history as the first film to gross over $2 billion!

But, after a phenomenal ride with the first installment, why did it take a whopping 13 years for “Avatar: The Way of Water” to grace our screens? Well, there are many reasons, as it turns out. Let’s go deep into the tale of Avatar 2's prolonged voyage to the big screen.

Elle / As it turns out, there were many reasons that delayed the making of “Avatar 2” for so long.

The Maestro’s Busy Calendar

First and foremost, let’s talk about the man, the myth, the legend: James Cameron. As the director of cinematic titans like “Titanic,” “Terminator,” and, of course, “Avatar,” Cameron is not someone who rushes his craft.

After the 2009 release, he was juggling multiple commitments, from environmental activism to exploring the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Deepsea Challenger submersible.

Yeah, that is right. The man does not just create epic movie adventures. He lives them too!

Artistic Evolution and Changes

Another compelling reason for the delay was Cameron's artistic vision for “Avatar: The Way of Water.” As with most sequels, especially for a visionary director like Cameron, the bar was set extremely high. The plot, themes, and visuals needed to not only match the original’s grandeur but exceed it.

Willie / IG / One of the main reasons why “Avatar: The Way of Water” took so long to make is the busy schedule of James Cameron.

This meant:

  • Reimagining the world of Pandora
  • Introducing new ecosystems
  • Ensuring technological advancements to make it all possible

So, Cameron wanted to explore the oceanic realms of Pandora, which posed its own set of challenges.

The Lure of Avatar Franchising

Now, while James Cameron had his eyes set on creating the sequel, the world of Pandora had grown beyond just movies. After the massive success of the first film, Avatar became a brand. This led to ventures like themed park attractions at Disney's Animal Kingdom and numerous merchandising opportunities.

GTN / Creating an underwater realm that was as mesmerizing and believable as the terrestrial one took time, research, and a whole lot of technological innovation.

Overseeing and ensuring the integrity of the Avatar brand was another factor that sidetracked Cameron. Plus, let’s not forget the man was planning not just one but FOUR sequels. That is right. “Avatar: The Way of Water” is just the tip of the iceberg. There are more adventures awaiting us on Pandora!

Parting Thoughts

James Cameron's “Avatar: The Way of Water” is not just another sequel churned out for profits. It is a labor of love, a testament to one man's vision, and an ode to cinematic excellence. The 13-year wait was a mix of Cameron's jam-packed schedule, the pursuit of artistic perfection, and the evolving world of Avatar franchising.

But hey! If there is one thing Cameron has taught us over the years, it is that good things take time. And with the breathtaking world of Pandora beckoning us once more, all we can say is that it was well worth the wait!
