They are continuously reinventing the concepts, and that's paying off. Credit goes to the independent filmmakers who have shown the courage to experiment with new ideas. If you are looking for originality, indie horror films are worth watching. If you are eager to catch a spine-chilling original indie horror film or want to try out something new, the following are some of the best ones you can add to your binge-watching list.
Host
In this 2020 film, six friends decide to connect amid lockdown via a zoom call. It's Haley's turn to plan an interesting activity. She decides to arrange a meeting where they try to connect with the dead through a chosen medium. Jemma, meanwhile, narrates a made-up story about a boy in her school who commits suicide by hanging himself. However, things turn awry when a demonic soul disguising as the hypothetical boy makes its presence felt.
Slowly, the entity starts manifesting itself in their homes, and the friends realize that something is not right around them. They witness unusual happenings, and all hell breaks loose. The pals have no idea whether they will be able to live through the night or not. Directed by Rob Savage, the supernatural horror flick stars Hayley Bishop, Emma Louise Webb, Caroline Ward, Radina Drandova, and Jemma Moore.
Train to Busan
Seok-Woo is a hedge fund manager and a divorced father who takes Su-an, his little daughter, to visit her mother. They take a train from Seoul to Busan. The entire film revolves around what happens on the train when a zombie apocalypse breaks out suddenly in the country. The apocalypse hits the train to Busan, and to the horror of the father and daughter duo, one compartment after another falls prey to it.
The zombie onslaught will send a shiver down your spine. None gets infected by the flesh-eaters from the train crew to the passengers. The 2016 South Korean horror film is a work by director Yeon Sang-ho. It features Gong-Yoo, Ma Dong-Seok, Choi Woo-Shik, Kim Su-an, Ahn So-hee, Kim Eui-Sung, and Jung Yu-mi.
Get Out
Get Out is the story of a young and talented photographer named Chris Washington, who loves Rose Armitage, his fiance of Caucasian origin. He plans to visit her family home in Lake Pontaco and meet the girls' parents on the weekend. It has been five months or so that they have been going around, and it was time for things to be taken a level up. The Armitage family had no idea about Chris' skin complexion, though.
When he finally arrives at the Armitage residence, he meets his fiance's father, a neurosurgeon by profession, and her mother, a psychiatrist, and has a lot of knowledge about hypnosis. Gradually, Chris unravels a dark secret surrounding the gorgeous estate. The remoteness of its location adds to the mystery, and Chris wants to go down to the bottom of things. He wants to find out if there is anything that the Armitage family is hiding. This is Jordan Peeles' directorial debut. It has a cast comprising Daniel Kaluuya, Alison Williams, Catherine Keener, Stephen Root, Calen Landry Jones, Bradley Whitford, and others.
Goodnight Mommy
Elias and Lukas are twins. They live with their mother in a beautiful house by the lake. Things were going fine until their mom went through surgery and got her face covered with bandages one day. Elias realized that something was wrong when he saw her being warm towards Lukas while neglecting him throughout. Some unusual behavior like closing the blinds throughout the day, establishing peculiar rules inside the house, etc., was enough to raise the alarm.
Elias and Lukas infer that the lady they live with can be anyone else but their mother. They start comparing their mother's old photographs to her recent face and suddenly discover on the internet that their house is up for sale. Thus, begins their quest to unearth the truth. Veronica Franz and Severin Fiala have written the script and directed this Austrian horror film.
