Chelsea O’Donnell, daughter of comedian and TV icon Rosie O’Donnell, is no stranger to headlines. But this time, it is not about red carpets or celebrity drama. As of late October 2025, she is sitting in a jail cell in Marinette County, Wisconsin, waiting to be transferred to state prison after a judge sentenced her for violating probation.
Chelsea’s current situation is just holding tight in the county facility until the state finishes the paperwork and has a bed ready. Transfers like this can take weeks, sometimes even months, depending on how crowded the prisons are. Reports suggest she’ll be moved to Taycheedah Correctional Institution, a medium-security facility in Fond du Lac.
That prison is where many women in Wisconsin end up when sentenced to a year or more. While the official length of Chelsea’s sentence hasn't been announced by every outlet, one source puts it at 12 months.
GTN / County jail is no vacation, but it is more of a holding zone than a full-blown prison. Chelsea, 28, is in the general population, meaning she is with other inmates instead of being isolated.
Her daily routine is strict, but she gets some freedom during the day. Most inmates get out of their cells around 6 AM and stay in a shared common area until 10 PM. That “dayroom” is where they eat, hang out, and try to pass the time.
Meals in jail aren't glamorous, but they are predictable. On any given day, Chelsea might be served chicken patties, tacos, or even pizza with rice. These meals come on plastic trays and are handed out on a tight schedule. When it comes to fun, inmates have access to board and card games. Phase 1: Uno, chess, and checkers are popular. But you have got to buy them yourself. So, if you don’t have money in your account, you are out of luck.
However, Chelsea can still connect with people outside. She has access to cable TV, including channels like ESPN, FX, and the Hallmark Channel. There is a wall phone she can use, along with a messaging kiosk for sending texts. Family and friends can also visit through video calls or come in person.
That access to entertainment and communication is limited, but it helps inmates feel somewhat connected to the outside world while they wait.
What Went Wrong?
The News / Chelsea’s past arrests only made matters worse. In 2024, police arrested her three times in quick succession. One of the most serious cases involved child neglect.
Chelsea didn’t land in jail overnight. Her legal problems go back at least a year, mostly tied to her struggles with addiction. In early 2024, she pleaded guilty to felony drug possession and resisting arrest. She was given six years of probation instead of time behind bars, which included strict requirements like drug treatment and regular check-ins. That deal fell apart in 2025.
By September, she faced new accusations of sexual assault. At the same time, her behavior in the county’s treatment court was raising red flags. Officials said she wasn’t cooperating with her recovery plan. She skipped sessions, showed no progress, and gave the impression that she wasn’t taking her second chance seriously.
Authorities found her baby boy living in dangerous conditions. The home was full of trash, dirty diapers, drug needles, and even a meth pipe. It shocked even the officers who were used to seeing rough situations.

The Family Fallout
Her famous mom hasn’t stayed silent. Rosie O’Donnell took to Instagram to share her pain, posting an old photo of Chelsea as a young girl. She wrote, “My child Chelsea Belle - before addiction took over her life - I loved her then. I love her now as she faces a scary future.”
The 63-year-old comedian added that Chelsea was “born into addiction” and that her family still supports her, no matter what.
It is a heartbreaking situation. Chelsea has four young kids of her own. While their current living arrangements haven’t been detailed publicly, the family’s focus appears to be on keeping them safe and away from the chaos.
